Welcome to Year 2

Year two is a very important year, as it time for our pupils to consolidate the skills and knowledge learnt in year one. Children will be learning in an inclusive and creative environment and continue to learn inside and outside the classroom. The children will acquire a love of learning through peer support, questioning, trips and being in the ‘pit’.

Our pupils will be working hard towards their end of year SATS tests. The tests will allow the children to show their knowledge of spelling rules, grammar, punctuation, comprehension, arithmetic and reasoning. Over the year the children will be learning and embedding these following essential skills in order to be secure in the new curriculum.

Spelling – Year 2 will consolidate phase 4 and 5 but also begin to look at phase 6. The children will learn about sounds made by different letters/digraphs. They will learn how to add prefixes and suffixes.

Grammar – Grammar is a major part of the new curriculum. The children will learn about, nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs.

Punctuation – Use of capital letters, full stops, commas, apostrophes, speech marks, question marks and exclamation marks.

Comprehension – use of the text to answer deduction (answers pulled straight from the text) and inference (use of experience and events in the text) questions. Word reading is also an important aspect when reading, particularly unfamiliar words.

Arithmetic and reasoning – applying knowledge to word problems and a range of contexts, in order to become mastery.
